I have read so many posts over the years all over the Internet about EL-84's not having bottom end or overall terrible tone.I beg to differ, my little EVH 3 has 2-el-84's and 5 JJ ecc83s,it has massive bottom end and overall the best tone I have ever owned.the notes are nice and round on the wound strings, and the unwound strings have an excellent bite to them, maybe searing tone ! This amp has a resonance control and presence control, so that helps tremendously.I have swapped tubes with several brands, and they all have their place.upon swapping preamp tubes I have found the Tungsol Re-Issue 12ax7 in slot 1 makes a nice difference over the factory JJ ECC 83S..now I use the Tungsol in my Peavey 6505MH as well..I made a trade of a Nice Carvin Mts 100 watt head for the Peavey..I am glad! My Evh trumps the Peavey in sound and quality, but it is an excellent backup..it has a nice high gain tone as well..give these mini heads a try..I wasn't sure swapping tubes around would really make a noticeable difference, but IMO it does make a huge difference!

yep, I have a blackstar HT-5rh, dime the EQ, put a xotic ep booster in the FX loop and is godly. I dont gig anymore so they are perfect for me. and do you know what sucks? getting a tube pre with no name generic 12AX7 tubes that sound amazing. it all goes downhill trying to replace them. LOL

Lots of good lunchbox amps about these days, the blackstar ht1r is killer too, you can drive them tubes to the max in the house with that one!!

i thought about the HT-1 but the lack of 3 band EQ and seperate ISF didn't satisfy my inner Tweaker LOL I looked into the VHT special 6, the Epi Valve Jr. the vox lil' night train. although the HT-5 was more expensive it helps. I dont have the tone is in your hands abilities like Phil X, Gary Moore. to take an old guitar with a p-90 thru a Magnatone and sound like Eddie LOL Most of these lunchboxes were not out when I bought my Blackstar unfortunatly. otherwise it would have been a hard choice with Peavey's 6505mh's

LOL Same thing with my EVH LBX..All the literature and few videos I saw about them 7 months ago when I got mine, all said JJ'S EL84'S and 5 JJ'S ECC83'S..but the power tubes that came in mine were Groove tubes, their hottest version and no name branding on the preamp tubes, I called Fender about this and they said a few must have slipped by w/o JJ'S.Even though it sounded great stock I went ahead and JJ'ED it out fully minus the Tungsol Re-Issue 12ax7 in slot one..I still have the un-branded preamp tubes as spares because they really sounded awesome, I guess I never saw any un-branded tubes of any kind and over reacted! Ha! I Still have the stock Groove tubes too..I panicked because I saw lots of bad reviews of GT's,but these cost about $ 60 for 2 of them, and I got a matched hi-gain set of JJ's from Eurotubes for $32 shipped. So I did the math and the JJ'S seemed like the better cheaper choice ! Evh runs these el-84's hot at 28 mv/ma and the JJ'S handle the higher plate voltage and ma/Mv no problem!

I think you might find that people that say they lack bottom are the same ppl running a high gain bee's nest of a pedal at full fuzz. highly compressed fizz. multi tracked crunch is where its at. LOL

LOL Yep, you are right.it is crazy trying to add fuzz to an already high gain monster..For the hell of it I tried a OCD OD pedal and a ultra hi gain AMT ELECTRONICS D2 DIEZEL SIMULATOR PEDAL thru the EVH and the Peavey, thru the front end and it was a mess, just killed the natural harmonics and overall amp tone, these amps need no fuzz or OD pedals for high gain, the EVH I run maximum 3 on the red "burn"channel.it has so much gain on tap, and the Peavey I dime the gain on the lead channel and fatten it up with the resonance control. .You would not be disappointed in the 6505, + it has a headphone jack and it sounds ok, I don't like the small plug in jack like for phones and computers, 1/4" work be way better.mine came stock with JJ el-84's and the #1 preamp tube is a Ruby 12AX7 ACE HG high gain stock, with 2 JJ ecc83s to make 3 preamp tubes.I did put a Tungsol Re-Issue 12ax7 in slot 1 as always.overall it sounds great too..if I ever learn how to re-size photos I will load them here. I built a solid 3/4" pine cabinet for the Peavey, stock it's the cheap stuff, like pressed sawdust!..I also Tolexed the new cabinet in black and white snakeskin. My 1st time and it looks kickass!

yeah you dont need much. record 2-4 crunch tracks and watch the gain ramp up your mix. this is my bedroom amp. which gets the most use. I have a stereo rack setup (rockmaster Preamp, tc elect. rocktron) that gets about no use these days. but keep just in case of an Oh Crap moment arises. lol

ADA mp-1, A few eqs, BBE sonic Maximizer, Quadraverb, a million pedals, a marshall 100 watt power amp, a carvin 100 watt power amp, and Marshall and bugera 4x12 cabinets setup in stereo... I havn't touched it in MONTHS as ALL of my recording is done via Positive Grid Bias amp sims. Although its killer to plug into the big setup and majorly push some air; the simpleness of my line 6 spidervalve combo leads me to practicing with it more often. Turn it on, pick one of the millions of patches, and rip the paint off the walls; as the Bogner designed power amp in that thing is friken LOUD

Wimp!.... LOL I can relate. not sure what took my good hearing. My amps of yesteryear or that freakin' drummer beating the piss out of that ONE crash cymbal that would pierce an M1...... and he knew it! lol Jerrod you know the day you let go of that basement arsenal your gonna need it. Murphys law. play it safe and let it collect dust. hahaha!

I've been thru various home practice combinations, these days I stick with a Line 6 spider IV 75 combo complete with a shortboard controller pedal, got a few patches set up for various sounds, it just nails everything for home use! Gigging wise I use a 5150iii 50 watt head into a blackstar 2x12 fitted with vintage 30's which just nails everything I need in my band & then some

I too used a Spider 4 75 watter with the floorboard set up. I never had any problems with my Line 6's, and I too had some great sounds coming out of mine..I sold it 2 years ago, got a Blackstar ID 30, then the ID 60..they were expensive but I really liked them both, especially after putting in WGS Veteran 30's in them.but I sold them both back in December to get my current lineup..I

in between my two set ups I have now, I ran a line 6 xtlive for like 7 yrs when we did covers and the whole band went in-ears direct. 8 patches and I could gig any song, and all those tools were there if I ever needed them. I think anybody that states the bogner and xt's sucked just didn't put the effort to dial in. guys like Glen and Fluff took the one crap patch and whined for 6 minutes. I would show up at a gig with 2 guitars, wireless guitar and in-ears and my XTLive. consistant as hell every night. one trip from the car. I spent more time putting the drummer back upright on his stool and set up his stuff. I only had One gig that somehow we had a phase cancellation issue with the two guitars. xtlive and an ada MP-2 both direct out. never did figured that one out lol

and do you know what sucks? getting a tube pre with no name generic 12AX7 tubes that sound amazing. it all goes downhill trying to replace them. LOL LOL, yes, I have the problem with one of my triple XXX amps - some unknown preamp tube that gives it that "special" thickness in the mids. I tried about a dozen of alternative 12AX7's and none of them is exactly like this misterious one. As for EL34 vs. 6L6, it's surely a matter of taste. I can use both in my Triple XXX and have tried EL34 at some point, but it was way too "Marshall-y" to my ears so I threw them out a day later. Then I went through several brands of 6L6 until I settled with Sovtek WXT+. Actually the best sounding tubes in this amp are Sovtekk 6L6 GB, which should not be used here at all due to lower spec'd grid voltage (could theoretically blow up when you turn up the volume to the max, which I never do in my living room). The 6L6GB amp sounds somewhat "colder" and richer in the mids then it's twin with 6L6 GC, more "american" in Fender terms and a bit less bass-y.

I say we gather up all the holy grail 12ax7's, and send them to Myles S.Rose with a fiver and see what we get lol who knows they might be Groove Tubes. tho I doubt it. LOL also that would mean I would have to break into my friends house, take my old PV rockmaster and pull the 4 tubes. although I am quite sly, I am by no means a man of slender build or graced with stealth. the only time I have seen my ol RM was for the Kollaboration for one 30sec. block. had to give it back. Hmmm Maaaayybe we should do another one ahhh he knows I already have a new RM, and would probably check the tubes when I'm done. smarty pants. hahaha!
